What is the point of worrying oneself too much about what one could or could not have done to control the course one's life took? Surely it is enough that the likes of you and I at least try to make our small contribution count for something true and worthy. And if some of us are prepared to sacrifice much in life in order to pursue such aspirations, surely that in itself, whatever the outcome, cause for pride and contentment.

I did not expect to like this as much as I did. I listened to this and the narrator was excellent and I think because of that I got the humor as well as the depth of the underlying emotions. Definitely deserves to be a modern classic.

I was surprised by how amazingly well written and poignant this novel was! After reading the back cover, I was preparing myself for a potentially dull read: a butler goes for a drive and contemplates his long career as well as philosophically musing over what makes one a "great" butler and trying to define "dignity". I picked up this book after my daughter was assigned it for her English class. It was definitely a little slow to get into for me, but quite poignant once I got into the meat of it. It's far more than a story about British butlery and more a story about the lives we choose for ourselves. I definitely recommend it. ...more

How sad. I keep picturing poor Stevens working on his banter to impress his employer. Stevens does get a little emotional as he looks back at his life, but not unduly so. Unlike us, I don't think Stevens truly realises what a barren life his has been, & so isn't so very sad at devoting his life to service. The fact that he's worked hard at being the perfect butler is really a great comfort to him.

I'm glad I've finally read this but it made me very tired.
