What Members Thought

Ever feel like a book was written for you? Like the author had you in mind when writing it? Well that was what The Starless Sea was for me. I actually cried many times when reading, the ache and the longing and familiarity. It was for ME.
This book is haunting and magical and one to be held tightly to the chest for many years to come. Erin Morgenstern is truly a gifted person and I will treasure and cherish her stories for the rest of my life.

This would have been three stars if I had actually understood what was going on. The writing stopped bothering me (as much) as I read. The characters didn't grow on me, but I didn't hate them. I just...never had a clue what was going on???
I probably wouldn't have finished it if I didn't have to for book club, but maybe they can explain what happened to me... ...more

This is probably more of a 4.5 but rounded up for the beautiful writing and sheer enjoyment. Sometimes rambling and way too many characters (but isn't this looping around part of the feel of the place??). Magical and mystical and absolutely mirrors the love of BOOKS and stories.

To quote a familiar adage, this is a book that unfolds slowly and then all at once. I very much enjoyed the journey this took me on, even when I was confused or questioning its purpose.
Erin Morgenstern can break all the rules, in my opinion. I don’t care if her main character is passive, or the pacing is slow, or if the interludes don’t always pay off. Because her world is so delicious that I’m just thankful to be in it for any amount of time. I want it to be a slow and sweet unpeeling of layer ...more
