This book stirred up a lot of emotions. I had distinct thoughts about all three characters. Oddly, I didn't like any of them but really enjoyed the book.

We are in WWII. Each woman shares her journey in alternating chapters. I like that. Caroline is a former Broadway actress determined to save all of the French orphans. This was a difficult book to read. I have read the Ravensbruck book by Sarah Helm which details the events of what happened at the concentration camp but in a much more impersonal way. This book gave those women faces and voices. It made it much more real. I struggled with the decision to finish it but in the end I'm glad I did. Be prepared when you read this one. WWII books are never easy reads but I hadn't ever hear of the "rabbits" of Ravensbrück and known of the operational experimenting which was just horrific. Lilac Girls is told from Caroline Ferriday (works for the French Consulate), Kasia Kuzmerick (a young Polish girl who works for the underground) and Herta Oberheuser (a young female doctor who supports the Reich).

A powerful book based on a true story.
