What Members Thought
This book won't be published until January 2018, but I got an early copy from the publisher. I've been seeing so much buzz about it. First I need to say: I am so tired of "drinking woman" being shorthand for unreliable narrator. There were a few too many references of this throughout, so if there is a chance of another edit of this book before it goes into print, my advice would be to roll it back a bit. We get it. She drinks. She's not lucid. Got it. Let's move on.

Anna is a psychiatrist and a survivor of trauma. She is agoraphobic after the trauma and quite lonely. She watched neighbors with her zoom camera lens and drinks and pops pills excessively.
The story is told from the first person and she is quite the unreliable narrator ala The Girl on a Train which is something that can be done well or very badly. In this case, it is wonderful.

I continue to have a love/hate relationship with this genre. I love suspense but, reading as many as I do, it gets harder and harder to be impressed by them. I do appreciate the Rear Window parallel and the love for older films displayed in the book. However, the family twist is no twist at all. It's clear from the beginning what trauma she has to face. It's also clear that there is something amiss with GrannyLiz. I also could have lived without another protagonist who is an alcoholic a ...more

3. 5 stars.
Page-turning and a nod to classic noir with an unreliable narrator that you root for. The writing is impeccable and elevates what would be a standard thriller with a few twists in less capable hands. Most of the twists were surprising but the final reveal fell a little flat. Still, a worthwhile read in the Girl/Woman/Wife in peril genre. Deserves the attention its been receiving.

I didn't see the end coming as I normally do with books. It was very entertaining and an excellent summer read. The protagonist is hard to like during some parts, but at the same time it all starts making sense in the end of it all. I definitely recommend this one
