This was pretty good. I didn't know if I'd end up liking it, but I'm glad I read it.
This isn't my usual genre.
I think what makes this book so easy to like is because Katsa is pretty awesome. not only does she kick everyone's butt, but she also is learning who she is. She really grows and comes in to her strengths as well as her weaknesses but she also embraces it all.
The supporting cast: Oll, Giddon, Po, Raffin and others - they really formed and became real people in the midst of this story. A ...more

Re-read from 2010, still holds up fairly well. In this YA fantasy world, certain individuals are "Graced" with a variety of extra powers, indicated by having two different colored eyes. Katsa is one of these individuals, a strong fighter working for a king, when she rescues a kidnapped royal grandfather and runs into another of her own kind. I loved this book. There were so many excellent elements to it that it's difficult to hone in on just one--the whole story was well crafted and put together. I really enjoyed the romance, for one. Katsa and Po had an exciting chemistry that had me grinning gleefully as I flipped the pages. On the other hand, I enjoyed the complexity of the plot that centered on the political conflicts between the seven kingdoms and the abuse of power. The sentence structure was atrocious. I don't want to have to stop and reread sentences and paragraphs to understand what is going on. When reading the writing should flow and draw you into the story.
Then Katsa gets angry for no reason during dinner and just takes off, what?
