Re-read from 2010, still holds up fairly well. In this YA fantasy world, certain individuals are "Graced" with a variety of extra powers, indicated by having two different colored eyes. Katsa is one of these individuals, a strong fighter working for a king, when she rescues a kidnapped royal grandfather and runs into another of her own kind. This leads her to a new mission and mystery to solve, and resolve. Lots of action, some romance, the plot was a bit predictable but all-in-all, an enjoyable ...more

At first I wasn't sure about this book; Katsa is not particularly likable as a character at first, and I wasn't entirely convinced of the gravity of the main conflict of the story. But the farther I got, the more I really started to enjoy it, and found myself truly engaged in the story of Katsa and Po and their quest to protect a kingdom from a dangerous king. This was a slow start for me, but it definitely picked up by about 1/3 through and I flew through the remainder.

I had Winterkeep drop into my Libby shelf and to be honest felt I had to go back to the start. Thoroughly enjoyed rereading Graceling. Strong characters and tough subjects. Though these are a series they can be read as stand alones. Each book helps to "flesh" out the main characters but are not really necessary for the individual books. If you like other worlds, strong characters and magical intertwining of real world and fantasy grab a book and find a seat. ...more
