Secondary read. I've frequently seen They'd Rather Be Right aka The Forever Machine referred to as the weakest winner of the Hugo Award. To the point that if anyone has an opinion about which is the weakest winner, it's that book.
I Am Legend came out the same year. I'm not playing a game of "this is what should have won." It was, in fact, ineligible as too short. It may appear an odd choice, as it's currently considered horror, but the book was marketed as science fiction when it came out as it takes place in the futuristic 1970s.
