This novel had me laughing and crying. It was a very easy read on many levels, but don't be fooled: the ease was entirely due to the craftsman's writing, not the ease of the subjects. I fell in love with all of the characters, their plight, and the plot, all equally. I'm going to be recommending this little gem to everyone I know, regardless of their individual reading proclivities. What fantastic fun this book was! I loved this book! As a fan of Star Trek, the moment I saw the title I was instantly amused. I completely love the premise.
As we all know, when the crew goes on an away mission, the Captain, First Officer and Science Officer are always on the mission and they will always survive. Unfortunately, that doesn't mean everyone survives. That's where the "red shirts" come in. These low ranking extras have a very low survival rate on these missions.

Great satire and meta, meta read. I was a bit annoyed with the codas at the end until I got into them - they actually finished the book off nicely.
