Maggie is a manatee who wants to be a mermaid, but it teased for her size and shape by dolphins who say that she doesn’t “look” like a mermaid. Because of the confidence and love her mothers have instilled in her Maggie embraces her size and common nickname of a “cow of the sea” and turns herself into a moomaid (part manatee-part mermaid) by designing and making a costume for herself. All her fellow sea creatures love it so, they ask to become moomaids and wear costumes too.
This book is such a great introduction of loving oneself whatever size, shape, color that they are. This book would be a great beginning of the year book, when creating a classroom community and encouraging kindness and acceptance in the classroom.
