This book is about a little girl named Mira who loved to draw, and she spread her joy by giving people her artwork in order to make her town less “gray.” She met a muralist who, with the help of the community, transformed her town into a vibrant, happy, colorful place.

This is based on a true story about a majority Hispanic area near downtown San Diego, CA where Rafael and Candice Lopez (R. Lopez is the illustrator of this book), designed a plan to create art in their own communit

This is a great book to engage students through the different colors and pictures the author displays in the book. Latin American culture is reflected in the story through the use of vocabulary and word choices. Teachers may use this book to instruct about the art that goes behind murals and community engagement.

Maybe Something Beautiful: How Art Transformed a Neighborhood by F. Isabel Campoy, Theresa Howell and illustrated by Rafael Lopez.

I like how this book is based on a true story which does inspire young children to be creative artists and to be involved citizens in their communities. It also teaches them that good transformation is possible. This book is about a little girl, Mira, who loves to draw, paint, and create bright things in her gloomy town. When she runs into a muralist on the street, she discovers a new way to make her town beautiful and joyful.
