[close] A wonderful story about a boy who feels socially excluded at school, until a new boy starts school, and is picked on by the others. Brian reaches out to the new boy, befriends him and soon realizes he is not as invisible as he thought.
This book is about kindness, compassion and friendship. The book is beautifully illustrated. Brian appears in black and white while he feels left out or invisible, but as he begins to make friends with two of his classmates, color is added first to his face and eventually his entire body.
Many children at some point or another have felt left out. This book is ideal for school age children ages 6 to 8 years. The book has various cultures represented: Korean, Hispanic, African American.
The story could be followed by an activity such as having the children draw a picture in black and white and one in color- discuss how the black and white picture makes them feel and how the colorful picture makes them feel.
