Many children have been in the same situation as Jeremy; they cannot have everything they want, and so they will identify with Jeremy's situation. The book is recommended for children 5 to 8 years. I fully agree with the age recommendation because those are ages when peer pressure and commercialism begin to have influence on children.
The story ends with Jeremy understanding that it's the intangible things like friendship and family that really matter.
As a teacher an activity that I would encourage the children to do, is to imagine a super cool pair of shoes they would love to have, then draw/color and decorate these.
