This book is about a seven-year-old girl named Lena who decides to paint her self-portrait. She learns about the different shades of brown by taking a walk through the neighborhood with her mother and identifying the colors of their skins with tasty foods. The book won the Jr. Picture Book Award (KS Reading Association), NCSS-CBC Notable Trade Book in the Field of Social Studies, and the Florida Reading Association Children's Book Award. I really enjoyed reading this book! It explained the color of people's skin in a beautiful way. Lena and her mother walk around their neighborhood and Lena see's all these different shades and tones of brown. The book continues to showcase skin color in a positive loving way which is really amazing for children to listen to and read. This would be a good example of a diverse book to read in class to children. ...more
