The book's cover shows an African American girl on a tire swing looking across the field towards a fence, where a little white girl is facing her. Initially I thought the book was from the white child's perspective but it ended up being the view point of Clover (African American). It allows the story to be told through her eyes, her curiosity and innocence. The story demonstrates compassion and friendship.
