The Name Jar
by Yangsook Choi
This is about a girl from Korea who just moved to America and is deciding what name she wants her new classmates to call her. I don’t believe this book has won any awards, but it is one of the handful of books that’s about names. I recommend this book because I think it supports acceptance, diversity, and children’s identity. There are a lot of name based activities (what does your name mean to you, how did you get your name, etc.) that teachers can do with this book. ...more

This book is about the first day of school of a girl who has just come from Korea named Unhei. She learns to accept that her Korean name name is beautiful and does not need to be changed. Representation of her Korean culture and language is seen throughout the book. This book would be a great way to teach students about names.

The Name Jar is a wonderful story book that is appropriate for children from kindergarten right up to 3-grade. One thing though, does worry Unhei, and that is the pronunciation of her name. The children thought she has no name and decided to help her get one, as they wrote different favorite names and put all ...more

This book is about a Korean girl who just moved to the US and is deciding what her english name could be. I think this is a great multicultural book and can help teach children about diversity and a new culture. In a classroom some activities can be: students with the help of the teacher can find out the origin of their names, what their name means to them, or even how they got their name.
