This book at first drew my eyes to it because of the award that was given to it but after closer look I noticed that this title incorporated both English and Spanish. I then thought this could be a great book to include in a classroom and introduce children to different languages and cultures with. This book at first drew my eyes to it because of the award that was given to it but after closer look I noticed that this title incorporated both English and Spanish. I then thought this could be a great book to include in a classroom and introduce children to different languages and cultures with. La Princesa means the Princess in English and it is a great book about how a prince wanted to marry a young woman but his mother; the queen first needed to make sure the young woman could pass the test. The queen placed a pea underneath multiple types of mattresses, and if the woman passed the test the queen would allow for her son to marry him. In the end the young woman passed the test, married the prince and had lots of children. There is a small joke at the end that I thought the students would love and laugh at a bit. Throughout the book it reads mainly in English but incorporates Spanish words throughout the sentences as well.
This book won the Pura Belpre Award, which is given to books that celebrate the Latin culture within them. This could be great to incorporate into the classroom especially with those students who are from the Latin culture. The pictures take up a majority of the page which could be very useful to those students with disabilities because they could look at them for reference. By introducing this book in the classroom is could allow children learn that all languages hold meaning and value within them not just English language. It can also introduce them into different cultures, and believes. The pictures do a great job of depicting how some people in the Latin community look, allowing for those students within your classroom of that community to relate to the characters. At the very beginning of this book there is a glossary where they have all the Spanish words used within the book translated into English, this could be a great way for some students to practice pronouncing other languages that are unfamiliar to them. I think they would have a lot of fun with trying that. Lastly, this book rhymes all throughout the pages and so this could also be a great book to use if trying to teach the students what and how rhyming works.
