This awesome book is about how one may feel different from others because of reasons such as their race, culture, or abilities, etc. Reasons such as these ones and others may cause cause one to feel uncomfortable, different, and that they do not fit in. But that it is important to stand in your own truth and shine your light. And in doing so, it can help you to connect with others who see you for who you truly are and reach out to them. Walking into a room and the feeling of instantly feeling different can be frightening for anyone. This story demonstrates all the reasons we may feel like an outsider, such as your skin, language or culture. Others may not understand you, therefore they may make you feel inferior or isolated. Through strength and perseverance, one will see how connected they are to everyone else; especially others that feel the same way as you because no one is ever alone. Once this is acknowledged the world bec ...more

I would recommend this book because it is a classic to have in the classroom! The Day You Begin would be perfect read aloud for the first day of school for students who are nervous that they will not find anyone that looks like them. The students would be interested in this book because everyone can relate! I could relate to the page where a student's mom packed her lunch from home and her classmates thought it was strange. A teacher could use this book to teach about being kind to others, make ...more

"The Day You Begin" by Jacqueline Woodson and illustrated by Rafael Lopez is a great choice for a Read-Aloud on a child's first day of school. This book discusses the insecurities, fears, and doubts that students may feel in a new environment, particularly school. As you read through the story, each of the student's in the class feel different for different reasons, such as because of the food they brought for lunch or what they did over summer vacation. The book finishes with the students reali ...more

The Day You Begin is a heartwarming picture book by showing children that it is fine to be different and actually not fit in. By including many children of color makes this book just much more amazing - children giggling at a classmates accent, children making faces at ethnic food, and a child being worried about not travelling like her other classmates. Showing these young readers that diversity starts with them demonstrates to not be scared to stand out - we need that in today's world! ...more

I think that this is a really good book about being different and not comparing yourself to others. I love how this book is so perfect for a kindergarten class and especially those kiddos who may be starting their very first day of school. This is a warm and welcoming book that could be followed by a get to know me activity of some kind.

This book is about many different children on their first day back at school, whether that be new students or returning students. And how although they might feel different from everyone else, once they gather up the courage to participate, they will fit right in, with everyone else who is different from each other. This book won the ALSC Notable Children's Book Award in 2019, in addition to many others. I like this book because it promotes individuality and lets children know that even if they ...more

A bit long for a single read aloud session. Perhaps it would be better over a period of two or three days.
