Alma and How She Got Her Name is a story about a young girl named Alma who has 6 names. One day she turns to her father and asks why she has 6 names and where they came from. And the story continues on with her father explaining where all 6 of her special names derived from. This book is a 2019 Caldecott honor book with a very nice storyline. Alma Sofia Esperanza Jose Pura Candela is a little girl with a big name! A name that is way too long in her opinion. That is until she hears the story of how she got her name and her feelings begin to change. This is a wonderful story about how a name isn't just a name, it can be a story of our past, our present and our future. Children of all ages will appreciate this book for it's sweet but inspiring message. I would recommend this book for parents and teachers also because it opens up the dia ...more

Teaching for Change has a section on their website, where books are reviewed by recommended grade-level. This is where I found this Latinx, 2019 Caldecott Honor book, that shares the story of Alma and why her father picked her name. Alma tells her father that her name is “too long, if you ask her”. Here the reader is taken on a wonder journey of the connections her name has to her family, eventually making Alma exclaim that she “loves the story of her name”.

The author Juana Martinez-Neal won The Four Caldecott Honor Books
Alma Sofia Esperanza José Pura Candela thinks she has way too many names. But then her daddy tells her about the family history of her names.
This book is beautifully illustrated, is a sweet story that celebrates identity, family, and belonging. Something that everyone needs to be aware of.
This book is written in Spanish and English.

Alma and How She Got Her Name by Juana Martinez-Neal is about a young with a long name. One day Alma tells her father that her name does not fit, and he sets about telling her the reason behind each of her names. Alma makes connections to the names that she shares with her ancestors. When her father finishes, Alma asks about the name Alma and learns why this name was chosen especially for her.
