After so long of being daunted by this behemoth of a book series I have finally decided to jump in. Eye of the World is a good start to the series. I will say that the book is a little bit of a slower pace because there is a lot of world building and introduction to the characters. The book really picks up a little over halfway through. Despite some of it's "problems," (the LoTR parallels, a few plot holes, the final scene) I still think this is one of the best - if not THE best - first entries to a series I've ever seen. Later on, there are some books that drag...fans call it "The Slog." But Eye of the World moves rapidly and sets the foundation for amazing world building and character development. At no point do you feel like it's slowing down, or feel like it's as long as it really is. The sign of a great read!
