Yelena Zaltana is faced with a difficult choice, one that is a matter of life and death. She was convicted of the murder of General Brazell's son. And for that she is to die. But then she is offered a way out. She can become the food taster for the Commander of Ixia and risk death with every bite. The choice isn't too difficult for her. This was a good book, in my opinion. I finally started reading it last night after it sat on my bookshelf for months gathering dust. I was pleasantly surprised by the plot. The romance between the hero and heroine was very believable and didn't happen overnight (thank goodness!), which made me happy. The antagonist was a bit obvious, but then you kinda know that character will be the main bad guy right from the start, so it didn't bother me. Yelena was a likable heroine, she wasn't the spunky ty

It is easy to see why this book won an award within the first few pages. The story crasps at you, quickly entangling you in its snare. Beware the poison, for it shall keep you up at night searching for the cure found on the last pages.
The author is delightful. Her tale woven with such craft. It is rare to find books of this calibur anymore.
The sequel, Magic Study, shows amazing promise that I eagerly look forward to experiencing.

Five stars...one of my favorite books ever. This book was absolutely amazingly cool! It had the best plot, and the characters and their struggles felt very real. Yelena's personal conflict made me feel very involved in the story, and the romance was swoonworthy. A really good plot and setting is important to me, and this book definitely had that. The whole idea of poison testers is extremely intriguing.
