This was a book that I had the hardest time rating after reading it. There was such controversy about it and many people chose not to read it, believe that it would be a disservice to Harper Lee to read it.
I am glad that I read it. Like so many people , I loved To Kill a Mockingbird, but in many ways I found this book more honest. I enjoyed the book. I didn't come into it with the presumption that it was "an earlier draft" of To Kill a Mockingbird - it's a different story, about a different time, and with a different point. How do you deal with the loss of an idealized version of your father? I don't think the point of this book was race relations - that was the context, certainly - but rather the question of how someone deals with the realization that people she loves and admires have viewpoints that she finds abhorrent.
