Before I start I am going to say that I am not going to compare Joe's writing to his father's, I think that is unfair (especially given how much I love his dad's work) and while obvious parallels can be drawn I prefer to review this on its own merit.
I picked this up as the movie version has arrived on Netflix and I kind of want to see it but I hate seeing the film before I've read the book. I honestly didn't know much about the story or what to expect other than the fact that Ig's girlfriend is ...more

This was a very interesting book, I loved how they explored the concept of the devil not necessarily being the bad guy.
The story follows Ig, a young man who was wrongfully accused of raping and murdering his girlfriend Merrin. Ig has sunken into a depression ever since the murder and has resorted to drinking. When he wakes up one morning to discover that he has grown horns, life seems to take an unexpected twist.
I really enjoyed the characters in this book as I found them to be very real.

This book started off really strong-crazy strong. I sat reading it with my hand pressed to my mouth, astounded and chilled by what I was reading. I think the beginning was so strong that the rest of the book sort of suffered by comparison. Not that the rest was bad, it wasn't at all, it just didn't have the gut-wrenching impact that the very beginning did.

After a night of drunken debauchery, Ig wakes up with a horrible hangover and a brand new set of horns growing out of his head. At first he thinks that he has finally lost it after a year of dealing with the horrible unsolved rape and murder of his girlfriend (and most people thinking that he is the killer), but soon he realizes that he is truly going through a transformation. He also finds that his horns compel people to tell him their deepest, darkest secrets...the things they would not admit

Perfectly entertaining, but, as many reviewers have said, the premise and first 60 pages or so had much more promise than the rest of the book. The idea that a character wakes up with "horns" that cause people to reveal secrets and secret desires was interesting and could have made for a really cool book. But instead of really exploring the horns in this way, the book focuses on flashbacks and the story of the murder of the lead character's girlfriend.

I can't say if I liked this more than Heart Shaped Box, but I liked it at least as much. I'm also not sure how, if at all, seeing the movie first affected the emotional impact of Ig's progression and the various reveals throughout the story. But I deeply enjoyed this, and am pleased to give it my first 5 stars of the year.
