I saw something that said "if you only read one Western, read this one" and I think that's probably what I'll do! This was so good, it's hard to imagine anything else following it. The characters and the description of the country really drew me in.

A long book, allowing a more detailed and nuanced portrayal of persons and personalities. Despite its length, my interest was unflagging. Love, love lost, honor, responsibility, individuality, and group dynamics are all integral to the book. Hard work, the unknown, the wild wilderness. I enjoyed it greatly. Potential reader beware that the book can be mercilessly sad.
As for younger readers, sex is a not incidental part of the story. I bet the word "whore" was used a hundred times. ...more
