Another 3.5. If you like sagas and westerns, you'll like Lonesome Dove. I read this when the TV mini-series was on and everyone was talking about it. I read the book instead. Perhaps that's why I think of it more as popular reading than as great literature. I always try not to let an author's decision in story line influence my rating of the book. What a huge book! Eight hundred twenty-one pages!! I thought it would be slow and dull. Was I mistaken! Larry McMurtry not only held my interest but he also managed to weave an epic story together from many separate parts into a full-bodied whole. The chapters are short and easy reading. I thoroughly enjoyed the book.

I'd heard good things so I thought I'd give this a go, but I should have known better. Westerns aren't my cup of tea at all. It's probably me, not the book, but I found it so slow and dry and just plain boring. Gave up after a couple of hundred pages (I gave it a real try, but it's a big book if you don't like Westerns...)
