I'm not sure what I expected with this book, but it wasn't what I got. I hadn't realised that it was the story of a young man who had disappeared to wander around the US, ultimately meeting a tragic ending in the wilds of Alaska. The story was by turns sad, frustrating and strange and although the book was readable, there were times I felt that it had been stretched to actually fill a book. There is nothing strange in a person who wants to reconnect with nature, because we like all the beings on this earth are natural. Although, I have to agree with a lot of ideas he had i can't help but wonder why he did not at least use some basic survival tools. This was a easy read and a real human insight. ...more

This is a very interesting look at why Chris McCandless, a young well educated man, walked into the bush in Alaska and starved to death. The author examines a lot of similar cases, including one of his own, in an attempt to shine a light on the possible motivations that led McCandless to his death.
