This was a compelling, enticing read: the plot line is that two beautiful sisters/enemies/best friends compete for the love of King Henry the VIII. One, Mary, is pretty, "milk-and-honey", and starts out as a naiive 14-year-old girl. Her relationship with Henry is simple, she expects nothing but his love. Well-written, suspenseful, and powerful at points, but a lot of the discussion of the sexism tends to create some sexist points of its own. Anne is so scheming and powermongering that it seems perfectly legitimate that she can't concieve a baby because she's "sinned". It reduces her to a womb in the way women very much were in that time - except we as readers seem to be expected to believe it, and are given little reason to like her or be sympathetic to her. Normally the only books I like to read have to occur in the late 20th century. I've never been very fond of period pieces. Two reasons why I picked this one up: 1) I had heard from dear book friends that Gregory is a good author. 2) A close colleague at work was taking this book on the plane to Dubai. I loved this so much I went and bought the other 4 books in the Tudor series.
