During the five days of the unspeakable. The royal family was murdered brutally. A witch was framed. An entire kingdom disappeared with the curse. And thousands of Lumateran became exiles.
The book broke my heart million, trillion times as I felt for our protagonists. Finnikin is so brave and pure (and a little thick sometime, ha!). Evanjalin is so fierce and strong. Supporting casts are also well written.

I really enjoyed this. The setting was well-drawn and interesting, but what really grabbed me were the characters. The named character, Finnikin, is a young boy growing into manhood amidst times of great trauma for his people. Evanjalin, a young novice who assists him, is mysterious and has the amazing power to "walk through the sleep" of others. Even the adults are distinctive characters whom I came quickly to like.
