What Members Thought

This is the kind of book that it is impossible to say you 'enjoyed'. How can you enjoy reading what is essentially a train crash in the happening? But the book is so powerful, so horrific and so cold that you just can't stop reading it. You have to look impassively at the violence and apparent hopelessness of all of the characters because if you get too emotionally invested in them it just kills you. I really struggled with this book. I understand that the interconnected stories are representative of a particular time and place; but, I did not identify with or like any of the characters AT ALL! And, as bad as some of them were, the end of their hard lives was just too hard to take...even if the way life sometimes is. The writing style captured the local way of speaking without seeming contrived. I just wish I had found at least one sympathetic character to like.
