The events in Lirael happen a long time after Sabriel has defeated Kerrigor and a new enemy to the Old Kingdom is arising. Lirael is a wonderful character with her insecurities but also her magic. The Disreputable Dog captured my heart, as most animals do, and it was fun to see Moggett again. This second-in-series is even better than the first, Sabriel, in my opinion. Lirael has grown up as an orphaned Daughter of the Clayr and longs to develop the Sight like the others, but her destiny lies elsewhere. Meanwhile Princess Ellimere and Prince Sameth, the children of Sabriel and Touchstone, are growing to maturity: one happy with her role as heir to the throne, the other a reluctant Abhorsen-in-Waiting. This book begins years after Sabriel, the first in the series, so most of the characters are not the same. But the focus on free (uncontrolled) magic and charter magic is still primary; and the threat posed by dead who can be summoned to be used by dark forces is just as great, or perhaps growing.
