I seldom read a book and like the movie more (it's usually the other way around) but this is a case where I liked the book and loved the movie, which made the book come alive even more. Kudos to Ms. Paterson for writing a story that makes the reader feel what the characters feel, and that also lends itself so wonderfully to visual imagery.

This is a touching story about a teenage boy and his relationship with a neighbor, Leslie. There is so much to learn from this story. I wish I had read it when I was a kid. It actually takes place in the 70’s, the decade of my childhood. These kids are 2 ordinary kids with the same anxieties and fears that any of us experienced when we were growing up. I read this in my 5th grade english class and it was one of my favorite books. It made me cry, which books very rarely do. A sweet story of friendship and imagination, it's definitely a tearjerker. I remember it addressing some pretty heady social issues at the time too, such as child abuse and bullying. I would love to read this again as an adult.
