This is a touching story about a teenage boy and his relationship with a neighbor, Leslie. There is so much to learn from this story. I wish I had read it when I was a kid. It actually takes place in the 70’s, the decade of my childhood. These kids are 2 ordinary kids with the same anxieties and fears that any of us experienced when we were growing up. Jesse and Leslie help each other with these feelings. Unfortunately the story ends in tragedy, however, the author helps us learn from tragedy th

It's been a long time since a book has affected me in such a deep way while reading it, this book just about broke my heart. It left a horrible lump in my throat and a tissue box half empty.
What a wonderful story about friendship and growing up in a smaller town. I loved how it showed the different family dynamics of the children and how they all dealt with growing up. The author really seemed to grasp what it was like to be a 10 year old and what's important to both boys and girls of various ag ...more

I never read this one as a kid so I decided to pick it up the other day. I have seen the previews for the movie and because of that I was under the impression it was a fantasy book, but it wasn’t at all.
I’m really not sure how I feel about the book completely. It left me feeling a bit depressed. The book was well written and interesting, but it wasn’t very satisfying for me. I do understand it is a “teaching” type book, that is trying to bestow understanding to young kids, but it just left me fe ...more

I loved this book in elementary school. I remember buying it at the school book fair and crying and crying at the end. I don't get why this one often appears on the banned/challenged list-so weird.

I read this book (again) recently because I wanted to catch up before I saw the movie. Well, after finishing it I decided I didn't want to see the movie.
I enjoyed the book very much, but when I cry over an elementary read, I know I'll cry at a movie. Also, I imagined the movie moving away from the main ideas of the book (making friends with an outcast, a young boy's relationship with with his sister and father, family coming together for tragedy) to focus on what Hollywood can make exciting--Ter ...more

I read this in my 5th grade english class and it was one of my favorite books. It made me cry, which books very rarely do. A sweet story of friendship and imagination, it's definitely a tearjerker. I remember it addressing some pretty heady social issues at the time too, such as child abuse and bullying. I would love to read this again as an adult.
