This is non-fiction that reads like fiction. It's the story of Bechdel's life, in particular her relationship with her father, from her childhood through her early college years. The sub-title "tragicomic" is entirely appropriate: there are tragic events related here, yet Bechdel manages to tell them with a sense of humor that lets their power come through without making things maudlin.

Honestly, I don't know what I think about this. The art was fantastic, in my opinion, and I really enjoyed it. That, probably more than anything else from this book, is likely to stick with me the longest. The rest of it...well, it always feels very strange to me to stick a star rating on someone's life. So, with memoirs and the like, I tend to ask myself if I enjoyed learning more about the person, if I would recommend the book, etc.

This is an unashamedly candid and honest memoir that tells of Bechdel's complex childhood and adolescence as she gets to grips with not only the truth about her own sexuality but also that of her father, largely through their love of literature. The illustrations have a subtle gothic feel which adds to the depth and emotion of the story as the individual strands of Bechdel's life and family are delicately woven together with plenty of dark humour to keep your spirits lifted.
