I think when my daughters were small, they must've read this on their own as one of their earliest chapter books (which meant I'd never read it myself). But it would also be terrific as a read-aloud for younger children. It tells the story of one year in the life of young Laura Ingalls, who lives with her pa and ma and 2 sisters in a little house in a clearing in the big woods of Wisconsin, in the late 19th-century.
