I read Books 1 & 2, in the form of Persepolis: Story of a Childhood, in 2011, and gave it only 1 star. I wouldn't have returned for the rest except that my faculty book club chose it. I can't say I dislike it as totally as I did the first time through, but I didn't really like it much, either. I'm not really sure a graphic novel was the best way to tell this particular story.

For both of us it highlighted how relationships with parents, relationships with friends, school and teachers, love, dreams, and hopes are important to everybody, no matter how seemingly different and 'other' another person is. ...more

Amazing. I am stunned that I was able to pick up so much (or rather, Satrapi was able to convey so much) through what are basically cartoon drawings. It works in a different way from words, but it definitely works. A lovely book, frightening about the closed society of post-revolutionary Iran but often very funny too.
