A wonderful work of non-fiction, part biography, part history, which in places reads enjoyably like a novel. This book tells the story of Antonina and Jan Żabiński, directors of the Warsaw zoo, who during the Nazi occupation, were part of the underground Polish resistance, and helped save over 300 people over the course of the war, by hiding them in their villa or on the zoo grounds. I wanted to love this book. Then, I really just wanted to enjoy it. It didn't take long before I realized that I would be fortunate to just end up liking the book. I typically inhale books with the kind of premise attached to this one. This simply was not the case this time. The booked dragged and I lumbered along with it. It took nearly three months to finish, which is not like me at all. I knew I'd want to watch the movie though and I couldn't give myself permission to watch it without having
