I promised someone I would read this, and ploughed through it, ten pages at a time. I assume it was meant to be about the 'Primrose path' allocated to some, ie, the dull insipid Countess Paulina and Dr Graham Bretton, and what a harsh taskmaster life is to some, like the hard pressed Paul Emmanuel and Lucy Snowe, who find true love at last, but whom fate menaces with the elements, when not with the machinations of Madame Brec and Pere Silas.
