I was reading an argument recently about whether characters (especially narrators) in novels need to be likeable. My personal opinion is that likeable characters are not a requirement of a good novel. This turned out to be helpful when reading We Need to Talk About Kevin.

I just finished this book last evening. The movie trailers made me curious and I generally prefer reading a book before seeing the movie. This was a little hard to get started, due probably to the author's style, but I was caught up in it very soon. I'll be thinking about this one for a long time, and will be looking at other books by Lionel Shriver.
