Am I the only one to notice: The Stranger seems like a rip-off of Crime and Punishment? And not even a good one at that! While the themes of nihilism and alienation are the same, Camus is left in Dostoeyevsky's dust. Characters in both commit similar crimes and experience psychological turmoil and change. The Stranger is quick and highly readable,but when I finished I felt I was leaving a high priced restaurant where scanty portions are artfully arranged. I recently reread this classic, and I found it more interesting and thought provoking than when I first read it in college (like just about everything, I guess.) The book is short, but not light.
