The storyline and setting were good and the characters were interesting- except when they weren't. And the story would get lost in unnecessary narritive that was a struggle to get through. At times the book was brillant which made the bad parts even worse because you knew the author was capable of better. Could have been a really good book but was a bit of a waste instead.

This book really crept up on me. It's gentle, it's slow-paced, it has beautiful writing. And then the flip side is that it's about WWII in the UK, France, the US. Seeing the war through the eyes of a war correspondent was a good move - especially a female journo breaking new ground. I enjoyed tapping into her thought processes - how to write her radio piece, how to puzzle together a story.
