I am struck that such a charming place as Three Pines, Quebec seems to have so many murders. One would love to settle there and get to know the locals but for the fact it may be dangerous.

But rest assured, that Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Sûreté du Québec, is always ready to investigate and will indeed find the culprit.

He brings with him a team of resourceful detectives.

I totally enjoyed The Cruelest Month and look forward to reading the next in the series.

I read this out of order. I started with book 4. I think I might have liked book 3 more if I'd read them in order, but I think I might like book 4 better in part because it was my first.
This book does satisfactorily address some things that were hinted at in earlier books. And they solved the murder or whatever.

Nichol was still ridiculous, but slightly less so, since ...more

This series is getting a bit more Canadian each book. Why does everyone have to be so miserable and evil? Every tiny bit of joy and love is destroyed (poor Lilium). Sad.

I'm really not sure what I enjoy about this author's Inspector Gamache stories. I don't think it's the background of Gamache's history or his relationships with his colleagues and families, about which there always seems to be a bit of a teaser. And I don't think it's the setting (though it's an intriguing little town in Quebec that I'd love to visit) or the characters (though they're a varied bunch of unique individuals). I think it's just a good, straightforward mystery, where we get the clues ...more

Not a fan of that book at all. I do enjoy Gamache though.

I wish i had read the previous novels in this series but having said that this one really took me in and flew off with me. The characterisation and the mix of investigation and personal life were excellent.
