Loved it, loved it, loved it! I was dragging my heels from reading this one due to all the hype about it and I finally picked it up for a challenge and I regretted that it's taken me so long to actually read it.
What a wonderful world Arthur Golden has created for his readers. I really liked in that he chose to write it in a memoir kind of perspective and that he's set it up in the beginning with the memoirist (if that's a word?) stating that he could still hear her voice telling him her story be ...more

I was torn reading this book. I can't deny that it wasn't interesting, because it was. But the overall subject matter is depressing. I'm not sure if Golden really believes that the geisha culture was a good one, or if he purposely creates characters that try desperately to rationalize their own miserable lives, but all I kept thinking while I was reading was that this book is an attempt to somehow justify what is nothing less than child sex slavery. The history behind the Geisha, her training, her apprenticeship, her initiation, and her life…I found it so interesting. Sayuri’s life is definitely not an easy one. I loved this book, it was a fantastic read
I really enjoyed this book and got very caught up in it, so much that, when I thought that Sayuri was going to do something that would be wrong or bad for her, I found it hard to read further and had to take a break! It reads like a memoir but is really a fiction story. Very nicely done. I am glad I kept reading. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Loved it! Although the ending could have been not so "Hollywood like".
