I’ll admit that I wasn’t expecting much from this book, mostly because this isn’t the type of thing I usually read. I’ve avoided books with similar themes in the past because many of them seem to be, for lack of a better term, emotionally manipulative. There are certain settings in history that I find are often used as an easy way to evoke emotion. I’m not saying that’s necessarily a bad thing, but it does annoy me when it appears to be a cheap way to add depth to a novel.

the book was well written, with vivid images, occasional lapsing to formulaic, possesses engaging narrative, and (largely) successfully tred the thin line between philosophy and polemic.

It did not take my breath away; it is not one of the best books that I have ever read; it did not change my life, give me insight, or make me (more) sensitive.

I quite enjoyed this book. If I could give half stars it would have a half star more. I think in the right mood it would have been a four-star, but I wasn't really in that mood. Still, a great book. I look forward to checking out the movie now. ...more
