During a snow storm in the dead of night David delivers his twins paul and phoebe. Upon seeing his daughter he realizes she was born with down syndrome. I read this book long enough in the past to have forgotten that I read it. So when I picked it up expecting a new read, I was disappointed to find myself familiar with various parts of the book. I still do not respect David's inability to keep his daughter Phoebe and resultant lying to Norah. I still like Al and Caroline and their relationship. It felt real to me. I am glad that Paul and Norah and Caroline and Phoebe meet in the end, but overall I did not enjoy this story and will not read this ...more

I enjoyed the first part more than the end. It became more depressing for me as I read. The theme was thoroughly brought to life thorough the stories of Catherine, Norah, David, and Paul. Secrets and the consequences of them is a solid theme, but if I told you more I would spoil the book for you.
I would have liked to see more redemption, but I guess all stories can't have a happy ending.

A very touching and challenging book, it had some complex characters and some thought provoking themes. I would have liked more time spent on Phoebe's life, but ultimately she was probably the one who's life was most fulfilled after all the secrets. ...more
