I enjoy Paulette Jiles and have read a few of her books, so The Color of Lightning caught my eye. It is based on the true story of Britt Johnson, a former slave who settled in Texas and began freighting as a way to earn a living.
Britt's wife, Mary and children were captured by the Kiowa. Jiles story moves between Mary and the children, Britt and an Indian Agent, Samuel Hammond.
I was intrigued by Britt and Mary's story but often felt that the chapters about Hammond were a slight distraction.
