This short book is scarcely more than a slightly lengthened short story.

It is well written, with clear characterizations. The story is really quite simple, involving baseball, beaning, guilt, and redemption. There are few surprises, and the ending is telegraphed half way through the book. I have no complaints, but there are so many better and more interesting stories that it seems hardly recommendable.

But... there is a target audience for whom I would recommend this book: 11 year old boys. That

This was a story about a boy whose father is a pitcher for the NY Mets. During the early 70’s, the Cubs had some injuries and had to call up a guy from the minor leagues. His nick name was Calico Joe. He started setting records as a rookie as soon as he took his first pitch. When the Mets meet the Cubs, history is made and it changes the lives of this boy, his dad and Calico Joe. Grisham does a great job mixing fact and fiction in this one. I am a lifelong Cubs fan, so this was a lot of fun for me, revisiting old players and Wrigley Field. It was interesting learning about the "code"! Grisham is a good writer, gets you involved right away.
Not his usual stuff, but very heartwarming!

Perfect book for a plane trip. It has a nice story line which moves back and forth in time. It has a good story about a complicated relationship between a father and a son. It also has a bit of baseball thrown in. Easy quick and enjoyable.

Three extraneous factors decided the fate of the rating given to this book : 1. I have very high expectations of Grisham. 2) I am not a baseball fan, infact hardly know the game. and 3) I read the book on e-reader.

The book is the story of the Baseball player Joe of Calico rock, told by the son of the rival who hurts the star player intentionally. A good premise but didnt offer any excitement or insight.

I quite liked this, not too long, no courtroom dramas and you didn't really need to know anything about baseball! ...more

I love John Grisham so was disappointed in Calico Joe. I thought the book was predictable and, unless, you are a baseball fan, not very interesting.

The baseball sections just passed me by despite the author's attempt to explain the game, however the underlying narrative is less about baseball than you would initially imagine. ...more
