What Members Thought
This short book is scarcely more than a slightly lengthened short story.
It is well written, with clear characterizations. The story is really quite simple, involving baseball, beaning, guilt, and redemption. There are few surprises, and the ending is telegraphed half way through the book. I have no complaints, but there are so many better and more interesting stories that it seems hardly recommendable.

I am a lifelong Cubs fan, so this was a lot of fun for me, revisiting old players and Wrigley Field. It was interesting learning about the "code"! Grisham is a good writer, gets you involved right away.

Three extraneous factors decided the fate of the rating given to this book : 1. I have very high expectations of Grisham. 2) I am not a baseball fan, infact hardly know the game. and 3) I read the book on e-reader.
The book is the story of the Baseball player Joe of Calico rock, told by the son of the rival who hurts the star player intentionally. A good premise but didnt offer any excitement or insight.

I quite liked this, not too long, no courtroom dramas and you didn't really need to know anything about baseball!

The baseball sections just passed me by despite the author's attempt to explain the game, however the underlying narrative is less about baseball than you would initially imagine.
