A surprisingly short book for belonging to such a famous series; it almost reads more like a prequel than anything. The first half of the book is very boring. Our main character is a whiny and annoying little punk that actually is fairly likable-- charming in a reverse psychology kind of way. He, plus four other characters that I spent the first 50 pages mixing up, head out on a long road trip in which basically nothing happens. I really enjoyed this little fantasy adventure! Some may find this one to be a little on the slow side but honestly, when there's decent character and world building happening, I really don't mind a slow plot! It's clear that this is almost a prequel, setting us up for a proper epic fantasy adventure over the following books. We are introduced to a new world, new characters and even a fascinating new religion.

The first 115 pages are SO INCREDIBLY BORING. But it ended up being pretty good, so I'm glad I powered through. But seriously though, like middle school forensics prose boring. I do plan on reading the next book in the series though, because I heard the second one is way better than this one. ...more
