In this intense story of religious fanaticism, the narrator (I don't think he has a name) is looking back on a time in his teens when he and his mentally disabled older brother Hanny went on a pilgrimage with their parents, the parish priest, and four other parishioners to a shrine in a desolate part of the northern English coast. The aim was to "cure" Hanny, but there were other forces at work than the miracle of prayer.

This is the epitome of slow-burn horror and I loved it. I was completely captivated even though very little happened during most of it. I went in blind, so I had no idea that it had so much to do with religion. I am a sucker for anything that combines horror and religion, and this was no exception. I found this book completely fascinating.
