I also gave 5 stars to the first book by this author, The Lace Reader. Nevertheless, I was simply blown away by this one. Its hold on me started slowly, but by the last third of the book I simply couldn't put it down. In some ways, it's very hard to read: the protagonist, Zee, had a mother with bipolar disorder who killed herself when Zee was only 13; now, Zee's father has Parkinson's which is beginning to merge with Alzheimer's; and Zee herself, a therapist, has just had a very upsetting experi

3.5 Stars.
This book was really uneven. It started out really strong, sucking me in from the start but then once the author changed the action from Zee's practice in Boston to her being with her ailing father in Salem things started to unravel a bit. While I liked the story of her going home to take care of her father after his long time partner has left, I felt like she threw in too many stories and characters to make things really work. On the plus side, I loved reading more about Salem, having ...more

Brunonia Barry does a great job weaving Zee's story with that of Lily and her parents. I really enjoyed the little nuances that connected Zees story to the fairy tale of the house on Turner Street.
My favorite part was when she was with Hawk. Hawk was such an interesting character that I liked from the start. I liked him much more than Michael, who was to clean and almost came off as a bit self-centered. Zee's appeal grew for me as I read the story more.

Ok, so I have been wanting to get this book for quite some time. I was surprised and beyond thrilled to find out that Ms. Barry went to my alma matta and is from Mass. (I'm a New Englander, too!) I purchased her previous book, The Lace Reader, so this was on my have-to-have list. And imagine my excitement to see it offered as a First Reads book...well multiply that times 50 when I found out I had won a copy!!! After having it practically jump into my hands at Borders the other day, I simply cann

This book was complex with many sub-themes, some of which would have made great stand-alone books. I was interested in the main character's journey. I was interested in the mental illness and Parkinson's disease that was explored through different characters. There was some mystery and romance to help the story along. I also liked the ocean and navagaitonal ties. A few parts of the story seemed slow but were still necessary to the plot.
