While I enjoyed this book, I found it was somewhat of a disappointment to me. Someone told me that the English version was translated from French, so maybe that was the problem. This is a beautiful book describing the life of 2 Chinese teenagers undergoing re-education. It is not a book describing that re-education but a novel depicting their journey into secret literature, their ability for storytelling and their effect on other people's lives. It is really difficult to describe but a real joy to read. ...more

This book was a four star read until the very dissatisfying ending. Am I missing something here?! Am I not making necessary parallels between this book and the writings of Balzac? Help me out here.

I do, however, feel compelled to read some Balzac now...or something else with the depth I prefer. ...more
