What Members Thought

Reminiscent of Robert Louis Stevenson's The Bottle Imp, this story is about an unexpected change of fortune for a not too fortunate character. Although I did not read the original version (got a Spanish translation) I found the writing style very likeable; I think Steinbeck did a good job capturing the rural life of Mexican natives, their semi-supernatural semi-religious beliefs, and the oppression that they were victims of (and still are, sadly) because of their academic limitations.

For such a short book, this took me rather a long time to read. I found it amazingly powerful and disturbing. It's based on a Mexican folk tale, but perhaps only Steinbeck could've told it with such force and beauty.
